Jiang Liwei is the youngest Special Brigade Squadron leader in the history of the fire department. After witnessing the death of one of his fellow firemen Jiang became afraid of fire. The incident has also taken a toll on his family life, affecting his relationship with his wife and young son.

On the very day he is recommended by psychiatrists to retire, the pipes at Bingang Oil Depot explodes. Since the port workers are unable to close the valves between the tanks, all the oil flowing through the giant Tank A01 starts to ignite and explode, threatening the lives of everyone in the province and even those of neighboring countries. The only way to effectively stop the explosions is to go deep into the fire near Tank A01 and close all the valves by hand. Seeing this as the last battle of his career, Jiang Liwei volunteers to complete the mission.
